The infection rate for HIV in the U.S. hovers around 1 million and the number of deaths globally from bird flu are nearly nonexistent. Yet while the reality of these important issues are constantly discussed in the media, strikingly little coverage is given to the rate of those in the U.S. who self-injure; a number which far outweighs the infection rate of HIV.

This trend is also more disturbing because of the demographical differences between who the two issues mainly effect. With such a concentration of self-injury found in girls it is possible that current attitudes towards the practitioners of self-injury could be considered a sort of cultural-wide child abuse or negligence.

The decision to prevent HIV and AIDS is a personal one made as a form of self-preservation. However, the decision to prevent self-injury is a decision that can only be made by society has a whole. In order to do this there must be information and dialog on the topic. This film will succeed in that regard by bringing the plights of those who injure themselves and the stories of those doctors and researchers at the forefront of the field out into the open in a way that can appeal to a wide audience.
