The phenomenon of self-injury among certain demographics is considered by some to be an epidemic. While accurate representations of the numbers of people who engage in this practice are nearly impossible, some estimates show that between two and four million Americans cut or otherwise habitually inflict injury upon their own bodies. The majority of these cases are found in young women between 13 and 30 years old.

This practice has been misunderstood - even by the medical establishment - for over 30 years. Today, a group of pioneering researchers are finally beginning to have their research accepted by the main-stream medical and psychological establishment. Today, those who self-injure are being given a voice.

The question is: What does society do about it?
