Without Loops - Tory Z Starbuck
Tuesday, 15 June 2010 03:09

I've been working on a film somewhat centered around Tory Z Starbuck and it will include interviews with Tory Z. Starbuck, his friends and band mates, archival footage from his career in music, as well as several music videos created exclusively for the film by Eric Matthew and Jeff Harris. Here is a sneak peak into what these videos could look like in the final film. Several of the videos in the film were shot at a live show in October of 2006. Performing in front of a green screen, the band is working with Shattered Pictures to come up with live performances the likes of which have never been seen before. This is one of those live videos.

The Distant Sound of Trains
Monday, 27 October 2008 21:38

This was my senior thesis film at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.  I graduated in 1999 with a degree in Cinema and Photography.  I'm proud to say that this, unlike many student films, is not about suicide.  The story follows Nathan, a young man from the country now living in the city, as he returns home to visit his parents and confront what was, for him, a traumatic childhood event.

After Images
Monday, 27 October 2008 19:54

This film was done for an optical printing independent study with one of my professors, Mike Covell, in Carbondale around the fall of 1998.  I was lucky enough to have Charles Swedlund as a professor for a photography class the semester prior and he shared with the class some of his own film work.  The film, called Flowing Waters if I recall correctly, was done in the tricolor technique.  His film inspired me to take this technique a step further.

Drowning - Julie Schurr
Wednesday, 05 December 2007 17:22
I did a 2 camera shoot a while back (not sure how long ago) with Julie. She was performing at The Ground Floor, the shooting location for many videos on this site, in Belleville, IL so I set up the cameras, tapped into the sound system, and shot the whole show. This is the fist video I've cut from it.

I first met Julie in 2004 when she came to an opening I was having. I was presenting an extensive photo-essay on Southern Mexico as well as screening the 20 minute version of Shattered Faith that can be found on this site. A friend of her's brought her to see that film. On and off for the next year or so we talked about the project. Nothing came of it, though, as I was spending a lot of time trying to not be on the streets and she was on tour quite a bit. I hope we can get back to it and make something happen.

Pretty Mess - Femme Fatality
Wednesday, 03 October 2007 23:15
Here is a video for all you Femme Fatality fans in the Femme Family. Thanks to everyone who came out for the shoot and be aware of upcoming projects! I'm sure most of you have come here via MySpace but Shattered Pictures doesn't roll with MySpace...we're to cool and not schizophrenic enough for that so you'll just have to revive the bookmark feature of your browser and come back to Shattered Pictures often.

This video was made by Eric Matthew, Gabriel John, Carson Minow, and Novei Beige with additional camera work by Jeff Harris-Stowe-Scion-opotamus. Special thanks to Dave Edgar for special equipment and Stefan Hester for location usage.

The upcoming film, 200 Albums: The Tory Starbuck Experience (working title) will include interviews with Tory Z. The Decemberists
Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:40
The new music video for The Decemberists, O' Valencias, was again shot in front of a green screen somewhere not by me. I have, however, edited the film and done some unique things with the footage. This was all for a contest that MTVU was having to see what people could do with the footage. Even if my video is the best I fear I may not win because I am no longer in college. Which sucks because I spent a lot of time on it at the expense of Tory Z Starbuck's stuff. So I hope you'll check it out and enjoy it!

H1B
Tuesday, 25 July 2006 17:57
This is a film for which Eric Matthew was the cinematographer. Shot in 2005, the film follows the story of an Indian man who's mother is sick in India and he must decide weather to return to be with her or to stay in the U.S. This is the first film that I was the Director of Photography on since 1999 and it was a great experience to get back into what I love to do. Since shooting this film I have shot several other projects, including Russian Roulette. An excerpt of that film will be posted on this site when it is completed.

You'll Be My Jesus
Monday, 24 July 2006 11:01
The new music video for Yesterday's Whore, You'll be my Jesus, was again shot at The Ground Floor in Belleville, IL. The original idea of the video followed the account of Judas and Jesus where Judas was actually pivotal in Jesus' fame because of the fact that the two conspired to get Jesus killed. In the end, however, for me at least, the film takes on more of a social context because it really seems to bring out the social rolls and positions of women and becomes a commentary on issues related to gender rolls.
